Buffy has her Puppies

Last night I had a dream that my female Maltese, Buffy, gave birth to three puppies, but when I turned around, there were actually four of them instead of three.

Today, Buffy gave birth to three beautiful puppies. I thought she was finished, so I left the room for just a moment. When I went back in, there was a fourth one.

It didn’t hit me until yesterday that it was about that time for Buffy to be a mommy. With the flood and school and more deaths than usual and all of these crises that seem to keep cropping up, I had almost forgotten. So last night, I started looking up ways to prepare myself for this, and I was totally not ready for this. Her own personal little whelping place didn’t get made until today, and about five minutes after I came home from work, she started having her first one.

I was super-worried that things weren’t going to go well, because Buffy is way too young to be a mommy. If you will remember, I had tried to keep her and Leo away from each other when she was in heat, but Leo is a very determined mother-effer (now, literally). I was worried she might eat them. I thought she was too small. So part of me was just totally in denial that she was even pregnant.

But then they came, and they were the most beautiful little rat-looking things I had ever seen! Buffy knew exactly what to do…and she didn’t even read What to Expect When You’re Expecting. I am so happy that these little darlings will be a part of my life over the next few weeks.

Even if it does make me a 25-year-old grandma.
