Sufjan Stevens album Songs For Christmas–All of the Sufjan Stevens Christmas songs are good.  You just can’t go wrong.  I couldn’t pick just one!  Randomly, “Put the Lights on the Tree” is a great indication of what you might hear on the rest of the album.

Yo La Tengo:  “It’s Christmas Time For your inner hippie.

Belle and Sebastian:  “Santa Claus The Santa in this song should be put on the naughty list. What will he put under your Christmas tree? “Nothing! Nothing! Nothing! Nothing!”

Band of Horses:  “The First Song If you close your eyes and listen to the first few seconds, and you aren’t overcome with a sense of peace, well, then you’re just a Scrooge anyway! For fans of The Shins.

I would add Destiny’s Child’s Carol of the Bells to this list and of course The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York with the late Kristy Macoll.

But how could you forget “Chiron Beta Prime” by Jonathan Coulton?

I know I’m going to get trampled to death for mentioning this one, but how about “Don’t They Know It’s Xmas,” by Band Aid?

Up until this year, I despised this song, but this year I’ve been singing it out loud when no one is around. As an added bonus, the video features Bono without sunglasses.

I think you have to include the Entirety of The Vandals’ “Oi to the World” album – it’s a little sick and demented at times (“My First Christmas as a Woman,” “Grandpa’s Last Christmas,” “Thanks for Nothing”), but for those who are tired of the X-Mas drivel out there will be happy for a little change in scenery. The punk version of the “Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies” is wild, and the title track has been posthumously covered by No Doubt.

You should check out “Xmas Curtain” by My Morning Jacket. Definitely not your standard Christmas Song, and guaranteed not to put you to sleep like some of the old standards might.

I just found Being Alone for Christmas & Christmas Lullaby. I really enjoy them. Len Francis Monahan sings these songs.
