Sadness for the Holidays

19 Dec

Yesterday, a friend of my sister’s, Ben*, committed suicide.  He was 21 years old. I honestly can’t figure out why anyone would or could do something like this, but my heart really goes out to his family and friends.  The thing that is odd about this is, Ben is the person who found his best friend and our friend a couple of months ago, who also committed suicide.  Ben saw how much of a wreck his friend’s family and loved ones were after this tragedy, and yet he did it too, right at Christmas time.

Another one of their friends also died unexpectedly this year. So, this is three young men, three sudden deaths, in one year.  This is a small town, and everyone basically knows everyone. I would just like to know, when is this going to end?  How many more young people are going to die?

Another thing that astonishes me:  I read this kid’s blog last night. He was surprisingly insightful. I guess you really just never know.  So please, if life gets too hard to bear, or you are having any thoughts like this or know anyone who is, PLEASE talk to someone, or visit Hopeline or call 1-800-SUICIDE.  Believe me, there ARE people who love you and will be crushed when you are gone.

I leave you with some insights from Ben’s most recent blog:

Love For The Human Race

Many of us are troubled by our actions.  Some of us may commit actions that seem worse than the actions that are committed by other people.  Many may also attempt to justify their actions according to the actions of others that he or she may feel are worse than those that are committed by oneself.  With both scenarios, we all commit acts that are displeasing.  There is hope. We can cease to commit such actions by steering our minds and our thoughts towards more positive things.

For instance, if someone does something to you that is displeasing, you can consider the reasons behind such an act.  If you think deeply enough, you will find a reason for the offensive act and thus be able to let it pass.  You need not be negative in your thinking of others and their actions. Instead, you should analyze and discover the reason why a person would act in such a way.  Every time you see a person and every time you talk to a person, say to yourself, “I love this human being.” Once you have mad a habit of thinking that you love everyone with whom you come into contact, you will then be able to live with more peace and less frustration.

It is difficult to love everyone.  Do not think or feel that you must love every human being on the earth, but have love for the human race as a whole.  Once you are able to love all humans as a group of humans, you will then be able to love all humans on an individual basis.  This will allow you to eliminate hatred, frustration, disappointment, and many other thoughts that occur towards others of the human race.  When someone “gives you a bad vibe,” do not judge that individual.  Remember that you love the human race, and that individual is a human, so you love them.

I will probably be back on here and Gravy sometime after Christmas. Please take care of yourselves and each other this holiday!
